The rule of thirds divides the frame into a grid of nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing the main subject along one of those lines, or where two of them cross, usually creates a more balanced and interesting picture than placing it dead centre. Most phone cameras can display this grid on screen through a simple setting.
