A short, useful read for the Links Beat community.

Before standard containers, cargo was loaded onto ships piece by piece, a slow process that could keep a vessel in port for a week or more. The steel box of standard dimensions changed that. Containers move directly between ships, trains and lorries without being unpacked, so loading that once took days now takes hours and goods suffer far less damage or theft.
